Wednesday 14th October is International E-Waste Day. Developed by the WEEE Forum as a timely, much-needed reminder to address this huge issue and promote sustainable solutions to e-waste challenges, the E-Waste Day will feature all sorts of events across the world, carried out by a number of stakeholders, individuals, and organisations.
As the world grapples with the human health and socio-economic challenges associated with COVID19, our thoughts and gratitude go to all medical and essential professionals around the globe fighting this global pandemic. We also join with and express our sympathies for the many families who are mourning the tragic loss of close ones. Prioritising waste management during such challenging times is regrettably critical not only to the health of the planet, but also to human health. Our appreciation goes out to the hundreds of workers in the waste sector, keeping our streets, homes and hospitals free of waste. A very large, but as yet unquantified, amount of medical waste has been generated, as a result of our COVID19 response, by existing and newly-built hospitals, as well as the many makeshift health and relief operations. This waste needs to be managed appropriately.
Durante estos tiempos difíciles, en los que COVID-19 desafía al mundo entero, algunas buenas noticias son ciertamente bienvenidas. ¡Y Mozambique se complace en proporcionarlo!
El país acaba de enviar notificaciones de Medidas reglamentarias firmes (MRF) para siete plaguicidas que coinciden con las notificaciones ya disponibles de otras regiones PIC, por lo que estas pasarán a la agenda de la próxima reunión del Comité de Examen de Productos Químicos (CEPQ-16).
En ces temps difficiles, où le COVID-19 interpelle le monde entier, de bonnes nouvelles sont certainement les bienvenues. Et le Mozambique est heureux de le fournir!
Le pays vient de soumettre des notifications de mesures de réglementation finales (MRF) pour sept pesticides correspondant aux notifications déjà disponibles d'autres régions PIC, de sorte que celles-ci seront inscrites à l'ordre du jour de la prochaine réunion du Comité d'étude des produits chimiques (CEPC-16).

The country has just submitted notifications of Final Regulatory Actions (FRAs) for seven pesticides matching with already available notifications from other PIC regions, so these will therefore make it on to the agenda of the next Chemical Review Committee (CRC-16) meeting. En los últimos años, el reconocimiento de los vínculos entre los derechos humanos y el medio ambiente se ha fortalecido cada vez más. Esto es especialmente cierto para la gestión racional de los productos químicos y los desechos, ya que, de acuerdo con expertos independientes de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) designados por el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, llamados Relatores Especiales, las personas en todas partes tienen derecho a vivir y trabajar en un "medio ambiente seguro". Cela est particulièrement vrai pour la gestion rationnelle des produits chimiques et des déchets car, selon des experts indépendants de l'Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), appelés « Rapporteurs spéciaux » et désignés par le Conseil des Droits de l'Homme de l’ONU, tous les individus ont le droit de vivre et de travailler dans un «environnement sûr». In recent years recognition of the links between human rights and the environment has become ever stronger. This is especially true for the sound management of chemicals and waste, since, according to UN independent experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council – called Special Rapporteurs - people everywhere have the right to live and work in a “safe environment,” including, being free from the harmful impacts of hazardous chemicals and wastes. Work to secure this right has been gathering momentum, and in particular during the second half of this year, several ground-breaking developments have reinforced the work of the three chemicals and waste conventions in protecting both human health and the environment from harmful effects of hazardous chemicals and wastes.
Mientras escribo estas líneas, los ojos del mundo están puestos en la Cumbre de Acción Climática de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York, y ha sido muy alentador para mí escuchar compromisos de alto nivel centrados en el tema de los productos químicos y los desechos, lo cual indica que hay gran conciencia sobre los vínculos existentes entre los productos químicos, los desechos y el cambio climático.
Alors que je rédige ces notes, le monde entier a les yeux rivés sur le Sommet de l’ONU sur le climat, tenu à New York, et j’ai trouvé très encourageantes les prises d’engagements de haut niveau axées sur le problème des produits chimiques et des déchets auxquelles j’ai assisté, celles-ci indiquant une sensibilisation au fait que les liens entre les produits chimiques, les déchets et le changement climatique sont vraiment très étroits.
As I write these notes, the eyes of the world are on the United Nations (UN) Climate Action Summit in New York, and it was very encouraging for me to hear high-level commitments focused on the issue of chemicals and wastes, indicating that awareness of the links between chemicals, waste and climate change is indeed very strong.
